Joanne L. Johnson
Chair
2008-2010

Joanne retired after 34 years with Bank of America and FleetBank as Senior Vice President supporting merger integration and other corporate projects. Joanne is a past President of Girl Scouts of Spar and Spindle Council, the first Board Chair of Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts, a lifetime member of the organization, and was a girl member and troop volunteer. She is active in her community as a member and past President of the Newburyport Choral Society and Chair of the Hospitality and Audit Committees at her church. An Honorary Trustee of Wells College, Joanne served on the board as its first elected Collegiate Trustee. While President of the college’s Alumnae Association, she served on the Board of Trustees and the Board’s Executive Committee and for an additional term thereafter. Joanne is the Wells College Alumnae Association's 2008 Alumnae Awardee.  She holds a Bachelor’s degree from Wells College and a graduate degree in Retail Bank Management  from the University of Virginia.

Denice C. Ware
First Vice Chair
2008-2010

Denice (DC) is the Director of Human Resources for Verizon Telecom - New England Regional Operations. She is responsible for providing HR solutions and strategic initiatives focused on training and development, staffing, communications, diversity, talent assessment, succession planning, employee relations, and absence management.  DC holds a BS in Human Resources Management and an MBA, both from Western New England College. She has completed the Wharton Business School Executive Educational program and holds a Project Management Master’s Certificate. A native of Brooklyn, she now resides in Andover. She is president of the New England Chapter of the Women’s Association of Verizon Employees, a member of the Consortium of Information Technology Executives, and a member of the Hispanic Support Organization.  In addition to serving on the boards of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts and Great Women to Know, she is active in the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. DC is married and has a 13-year old son.

Cynthia Izzo
Second Vice Chair
2008-2010
Cyndi Izzo is a senior manager in KPMG’s Information Technology Advisory Services Practice, where she is one of the firm’s lead managers for IT External and Internal Audit services for the Northeast. Over the past 12 years, she has led numerous teams on client projects here and abroad, with a book of business exceeding $1.75M. Cyndi is KPMG-Boston’s representative to the Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting, and is a member of the KPMG Network of Women Leadership Council. In 2006, she sponsored KPMG colleagues at a CEO entrepreneurial business program for Teen Girl Scouts. In recognition of her charitable efforts, Cyndi was awarded the KPMG 2007 Chairman’s Award for Excellence in Volunteer Service. She was named to the Boston Business Journal’s 2007 40 under 40 list, which recognizes Greater Boston’s next generation of business leaders for their career success and community service.
Theresa Brockelman
Treasurer

Theresa is a Certified Public Accountant and partner at Deloitte & Touche.  She has over 14 years of experience in public accounting, primarily focused in the financial services industry. She is a member of Deloitte's National Investment Management Education Committee, organizing training conferences for the national practice. Her other affiliations include membership in the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants.  Theresa holds a Bachelor's degree from Colby College and an MBA/MS in Accounting from Northeastern University.

Suellen Robinson
Secretary/Clerk
2008-2010

 

Suellen holds a doctorate in mathematics education from UMass Lowell and is a professor of mathematics at North Shore Community College in Lynn.  She recently was awarded the NISOD Medal for Excellence in Teaching.  She was a Girl Scout through high school.  As an adult she has been a troop leader, consultant, trainer, neighborhood administrator, encampment director, delegate, nominating committee and board member of Spar and Spindle Girl Scout Council, and most recently, a member of the nominating committee and transition board of GSEM.  Suellen received the Thanks Badge for her work in Girl Scouting in 2001. She taught CCD for many years, served on her parish council, has been a consultant for the Museum of Science in the Camp-In program, and currently volunteers for the Merrimack Valley YMCA Camping Services.

Paulette M. Balich
2008-2009
For thirty years, Paulette Balich has been a nationally recognized leader in the telecommunications industry. She was Vice President and Region President of Verizon, responsible for personnel, services, engineering and construction in its billion-dollar operation in New England and Upstate New York. She is a licensed real estate salesperson, and is currently working with the Aubergine Group, a family-owned company that develops and sells unique and affordable condominiums. A member of Board of Trustees of her alma mater, Marygrove College, she chairs its Academic Committee and is a member of its Executive Committee. Paulette has been recognized by the Minority Manager’s Association of NETCO, the New England Council of Women and the YWCA for her professional achievements and service. 
Rebecca Balk
girl member, 2008-2009

Rebecca is a ninth grade student at Hamilton/Wenham Regional High School. She loves Girl Scouts, and all that the program has to offer to girls; especially all of its values and activities. She has been a Girl Scout for 10 years, and plans to continue in the organization for many more. In her spare time, Rebecca also enjoys theatre and reading.

Mal Coles
2008-2010

Mal Coles is the Atlantic Area Manager for the Corporation for National and Community Service. Beginning in 1967 with his assignment as a VISTA Volunteer to the sponsorship of the White Mountain Apache Tribe in Arizona, Mal has built a career in service and volunteerism spanning the terms of eight US presidents and twelve presidential administrations.  During that time, he has worked with the US Office of Economic Opportunity and the federal ACTION agency in a wide range of programming, training and leadership positions. In 1993, he was assigned to the White House Office of National Service to assist in the start up of the Corporation for National and Community Service, and the merger of VISTA and Senior Corps programs into the Corporation. Thereafter, he served for two years as the Corporation's first Director of Field Operations, providing management oversight for the Corporation's national network of state office, prior to returning to Boston in 1997.

Carole Cowan
2008-2010

Carole is the President of Middlesex Community College, the largest and most comprehensive community college in the Commonwealth.  Dr. Cowan joined the college in 1976 as a faculty member in the Business Division.  She was Dean of Business and Dean of Administration and Finance, and in September 1990 was named President of the college. Dr. Cowan received  Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Salem State College, a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study from Boston State College, and a doctorate in Higher Education Administration from the UMass Amherst.  She received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Suffolk University College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and School of Management, in recognition of her distinguished career in public higher education. Currently, Carole is co-chairperson of the Commonwealth Readiness Project Subcommittee on Curriculum Alignment and a member of the State Workforce Investment Board.

Elizabeth Doyle
girl member, 2008-2009

Elizabeth is a high school sophomore and council delegate who has participated in the Girl Scout program for the past 12 years.  She enjoys quilting, playing the oboe, physics, skating, sailing and other outdoor activities.  She was a member of the winning team at the 2007 state environmental competition.  Elizabeth has earned both the Silver and Bronze Awards and is working on the Gold Award.  She has participated in a national backpacking Destination, has attended an international encampment in England, and will attend an environmental Destination this summer in Hawaii.  She enjoys setting up and running programs for younger Girl Scouts. She lives in Needham.

Kimberly Furnald
2008-2009

Kim Furnald has been involved with the financial services industry for over 25 years. Currently, she is working with New Hill Management and is in the process of raising a venture capital fund that focuses on investing in companies that offer the potential to commercialize significant advances in the life and physical sciences. Most recently, Kim was a Private Banker with JPMorgan where she expanded her knowledge of alternative investment options and estate planning. She has also worked for Morningstar; Cypress Holding Company and Fidelity Investments. Kim is an alumnus of Ohio Wesleyan University and lives on a working farm with her husband and two sports playing teenage sons in southern seacoast area of the New Hampshire.

Richard J. Goettle
2008-2009

Dick Goettle is a Lecturer in Finance and Economics in the College of Business Administration at Northeastern University, where he teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in Managerial Economics, Finance, Investments and Financial Institutions and Markets. He is President, co-founder and principal of Cambridge Planning and Analytics and continues his involvement in the prestigious work of Dale W. Jorgenson and his associates. Dick has expertise in economic and financial forecasting, modeling and analysis and in the application of these to government policy and business planning.  His current efforts focus on the benefits and costs of climate change and climate change policy.  Dick has formal training in mathematics and computer science, business and management, and economics and finance with a BA from Miami University, a MBA from Northwestern University, and a PhD from the University of Cincinnati. Dick is Treasurer of Cold River Camp, a volunteer-managed Appalachian Mountain Club facility.  He is a Director of The Goettle Holding Company, Inc., an employee-owned, Cincinnati-based engineering and construction firm.

Wendi Haynes
2008-2009
Wendi Haynes has over twenty years of experience in public accounting, and is a Certified Public Accountant and Manager of Livingston & Haynes, PC. She works primarily in the not-for-profit tax and audit fields, and also provides tax services to high net worth families. She is a member of the Livingston & Haynes quality control committee. Wendi earned a Bachelor’s degree at Bryant College and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants. She resides in Duxbury, where she volunteers as a member of a Teen Girl Scout Troop leadership team.
Lindsay Levkoff
2008-2009

Lindsay Levkoff is a lifetime member of Girl Scouts.  She started as a Brownie and completed the Gold Award during her junior year at Gallatin High School.  While in college, she was co-leader of a Girl Scout troop.  She holds a Master's degree in Politics from the University of Oxford and is currently pursuing an MBA at Harvard Business School, after which she will return to Bain and Co., a management consulting firm where she worked in London, Boston and New Delhi offices.  Since moving to Boston, she has been active in the Patriots' Trail Girl Scout Council, where she was Chair of the 2006 Cookie Creations event that raised $15,000 for summer camp scholarships.  In her free time, Lindsay enjoys traveling, cooking and watching Tennessee Volunteer football games and debate politics.  Lindsay’s favorite Girl Scout memories are of making s’mores around the campfire and of singing Don’t wake the birdies and Princess Pat at Camp Sycamore Hills in Tennessee. 

Liz Lynes
2008-2010
Liz Lynes is an experienced Human Resources executive and manager. She is currently Vice President, Human Resources at Wellness/Old Mother Hubbard, the leading provider of healthy, natural dog and cat foods and treats. For several years, she was President of Acuity Strategies, specializing in HR solutions and services for organizations ranging from non-profits and for profit start-ups to established, multi-industry businesses. Previously, she was Vice President, HR at Digitas, Inc., and HR Director at Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Boston Scientific and Johnson & Johnson. Liz is a member of SHRM, was a board member for Lena Park Community Development Center and was on the Advisory Council for Project ABLE. She earned an MBA from Suffolk University and a BA from Regis College. Born and raised in Brockton, she was a Girl Scout for many years there as a girl.
Nancy Mobley
2008-2010

 

Nancy Mobley is President and CEO of Insight Performance, Inc., a strategic human resource consulting firm that works with small and mid-sized companies to build exceptional workplaces. Nancy is a coach, teacher and author in the area of building high performance work environments. In 2006, she was named a “Woman to Watch” in New England by The Boston Women’s Business Journal.  Prior to founding Insight, Nancy was a Senior Consultant and Team Manager for Watson/Wyatt Worldwide.  She began her career in HR at Prime Computer. A graduate of Wheaton College, Nancy is certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources by the Society of Human Resource Management. She is a member of the board of the Center for Women and Enterprise National Council.

Roc O'Connell
2008-2009
Roc has been a Girl Scout for over 25 years, serving on the board and on committees for Patriots’ Trail Council and the Reading Council for Girls.  Retired from the financial services industry, Roc now operates his own construction company, Roc 'n' Playsets, Inc., designing and building backyard playsets and other construction projects.  Roc serves on the boards of a number of civic and non-profit organizations, including the Reading Scholarship Foundation, St. Athanasius Parish Council, and Gunstock Acres Common Property Trust.  Roc has three children and seven grandchildren.
Melissa Palmer
2008-2010
Melissa is a certified public accountant and a partner in the assurance practice of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from UMass Dartmouth and an MBA from Babson College. Melissa is active in community service initiatives including as a member of the accounting and finance committee of the former Girl Scouts Patriots' Trail Council. Melissa is a member of numerous professional associations and is active with both of her alma maters. In 2006, Melissa was honored with the Boston Chamber of Commerce Pinnacle Award as an Emerging Executive, for her work at PricewaterhouseCoopers and in the Boston community. Melissa has four young children -- three daughters and a son.
Pat Romeo-Gilbert
2008-2009

Pat has a professional background in project management, quality assurance, strategic planning, training and organizational development.   She is a volunteer for St. Lawrence University, having served on the Alumni Council and continuing as an admissions liaison.  She was a member of the merger planning committee for her church.  She supports the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum as a member of the Friends of Fenway Court Development Committee.  Pat has been a girl and then adult member of Girl Scouts for over 20 years, serving on the Board of Girl Scouts, Patriots’ Trail, and as Troop Leader, Encampment Director, Town Coordinator, and on council committees. 

Mary Shapiro
2008-2009

As a Professor at Simmons School of Management, Mary focuses on team building and intervention, communicating in a diverse and virtual environment, personal effectiveness in influence, and strategic career management.  For fifteen years she has taught MBA courses on those topics.  As a consultant she works with teams in public and Fortune 500 companies.  In her research and publications, she focuses on women's careers and their relationship with power.  She has an MBA and MS in Economics from Wright State University in Ohio.  She was a troop leader for twelve years, Canton's Town Coordinator for four years, and on the board of Patriots' Trail for six years.

Margaret H. Stevens
2008-2009

Peggy has worked as an operations management executive in managed healthcare for many years, most recently with the Massachusetts Behavioral Health Partnership in Boston. She has been associated with Girl Scouts in various capacities starting as a girl member and most recently as President of Girl Scout Council of Southeastern Massachusetts and Second Vice Chair of Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts.  She has also served as President of Girl Scout Council of Vermont.  Peggy holds a Bachelor’s degree from Connecticut College and a Master’s degree in Education Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Vilma Thompson
2008-2009

Vilma Thompson is an Audit Senior with Acumen Partners, a consulting firm that provides governance, compliance and risk management, internal audit, operations improvement and systems and technology services. She has worked for over 30 years in finance, internal audit and risk management for Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, John Hancock Financial Services, Polaroid Corporation and State Street Boston Corporation.  Vilma has been active in Girl Scouting since childhood.  She served for many years on the Board of Girl Scout Council of Southeastern Massachusetts and its committees.  She is very active in her church and has served on various committees in the local church, at the state level and national settings of her denomination.  Vilma holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Simmons College School of Management, and a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Northeastern University.  She is a Certified Internal Auditor and a Certified Bank Auditor.
